Up early and our host had again provided breakfast free of charge. A lovely meal of rice paste in banana leaf with shrimps and ladies fingers.
The journey to Hue can be complex. There is no direct public bus and the train only runs from Danang. This would mean a 1 hour bus into Danang, a race through the city to the train station then a 3 hour train ride. The only other public alternative is a further 6 hour bus journey from Danang to Hue. The journey would cost less than 2 pounds but would be a nightmare.
I had been on the inter web and found a private company that offered a shuttle bus service from Hoi An direct for only 4 pounds each with a total journey time of 3 hours. It was a no brainier.
We were picked up at the Airbnb at 8 am and taken to a central point. There we joined a multitude of international travellers all with the same idea as us. To my surprise it was a sleeper bus. These buses are usually reserved for long overnight journeys and it was a pleasant surprise as we have never been on one before. The bus contains rows of sleeper chairs on two levels with a king size 3 chair bed at the back. By the time we boarded there was only the sleeper bed available. It is high with a small ladder to climb up onto it. The girls were a little daunted at this prospect as they are not as young as they used to be. It would require the skill and prowess of a Circus acrobat to negotiate this obstacle with any grace. Bless them, despite the ever present risk of IEG, they negotiated the ladder up into the king size bed without injury or embarresment. It was a comfortable if claustrophobic journey. Once you are eventually ensconced in the bed seats the ceiling is only 18 inches from your face so it’s tight, hot and the views are very limited.
After a short stop at a roadside cafe we arrived in Hue. The bus dropped us off on the outskirts of the city and I arranged a taxi to take us to our accommodation.
We are staying inside the walls of the ancient imperial city in a very old little house.
The host met us there and gave us the required info before we set out for some lunch. The place is amazing. An ancient 3 bedroom house adjacent to the city walls. 3 bedroom all en suit and a perfect little courtyard in which I am sat writing this blob.
The house was originally home to 3 families and the sitting area contains a well which would have been the community’s only access to water.
I don’t normally post pics of our accommodation but as this is so special I shall make exception.
The girls are having a nap after the days travelling and soon we shall shower and head out to look around..
Looking forward to it.
