Short walk today which was lovely. We added what turned out to be an additional 7 km onto our walk yesterday to get us to Arcade. A nowhere kind of place really but it served its purpose in so much as it made today easier. There are a lot more pilgrims now as both the coastal and central Caminos have verged here. Most, like us are continuing directly onto Santiago but some are taking a side route called the Spiritual Camino. It adds three more days to the walk and involves a lot of mountain work and a ferry. I suggested we take it but for some reason Crispy didn't seem impressed. Maybe I caught her on a bad day.
Today's section has been fantastic. Across the medieval bridge, up through the narrow steep streets and houses of Old Arcade. The new town of Arcade is not much to look at but the old side is beautiful. Unfortunately there are no lodgings or eateries on the old side so it isnt really practicle to stay there. From Arcade we walked on through forests and amazing countryside to Pontevedra. We arrived early afternoon in glorious sunshine and easily found our hotel in the historic centre. This is the first time that we have arrived in a town early enough to enjoy the place. We dumped the matildas and went out into the old square for a glass of wine and a relax. There are sights to see here but we are usually too foot weary to be bothered looking around. We have both suffered over the past few days with blisters that don't get the chance to heal before we again set off walking. The normal pattern is arrive, find the lodgings, dump the packs, rest for an hour then out for tea. In bed by 9.30. Up at 7am and on the Camino for 9am. Not your typical holiday but other than the aches and pains we are loving it.
We have now completed 10 days walking and are only three more days from our destination of Santiago de Compestela. Tomorrow is not a bad day with only 18km to cover. The walking should be mostly flat and easy going but the fantastic weather we have enjoyed over our entire trip is forecast to break. Its forecasting rain for the next three days. Typical. But we are prepared and ready for every eventuality. My only concern is that if our feet get wet then we are back to square one with the blisters. Hopefully St James will look after us and take pity on us weary pilgrims. . Time will tell.
