Its been a while since we "waltzed our Matilda,s" but now we are off again.
We have managed very little adventuring of late as it has been so busy with the business and Crispy has been working like a demon to try and keep the wolves from the door.
Since returning from our European odyssey in June we have been quite sedentary apart from a cheeky week in November to the Canaries. Fuertoventura to be exact. Its not surprising they call it "strong winds". The weather was OK but it certainly lives up to its name in respect of the windy bit but we did manage a little sea fishing and a days cycling around the volcanoes.
Crispy has fallen madly in love with the electric bicycle. Its going to be really difficult to get her back on a muscle powered apparatus now. Still any exercise is better than no exercise so I will allow her this small indulgence. Its the first time we have had experience of these marvels of modern bipedal technology and they are certainly very good. Its usually Crispy that is puffing, panting and cursing like a Glaswegian docker when we go cycling but she flew along like a latter day Mary Poppins. Overtaking me, smiling insanely at every small incline and leaving me the one perspiring and gulping for air in the sand. She loved it.
The downside to these modern marvels is that they are very heavy to push and as part of our route was OVER the volcano (which I omitted to mention to dear old Crispy prior to setting off) there was a brief interlude of grumbling and tantrum as she had to manhandle it over the lava flow for a couple of miles. Once back on a road she again was off like an Isle of Man TT Rider and was first past the post.
Boats. Until quite recently boats have always been Crispy's Nemesis. Not too long ago just watching Titanic on the TV would leave her throwing up in bed for 3 days and the thought of any water borne transport was enough to send her into fits of despair. However since a fishing trip out of Teneriffe a couple of years ago she has turned into a veritable Captain Bligh. Nothing nautical now phases her and I feel sure she could easily manage a shift on the Deadliest catch if we ever get really short of cash. Its good money I am told and shes a tough old bird. Its always good to have a plan in reserve. This time the sea was rough, very rough, but Crispy strapped herself to the mast and even managed to catch a very respectable Barracuda.
It was a good week and just what the doctor ordered. We are not huge fans of the Canaries but if I had to choose one Island I would recommend Fuertoventura over any of the others that we have visited.
Tomorrow we will once again don the backpack and waltz our Matilda,s to the antipodes. We are going back to New Zealand (Aotearoa) for a family wedding. Crispy is very excited as it will be the first time all of the family has been in New Zealand at the same time. Crispy,s Sister Lynn lives in Auckland and its her Daughter Anna that is getting married to a lovely young man of Maori origin called Locwood. Its going to be very special as its a buy one get one free affair. A traditional wedding then a Maori ceremony the following day. Being a wedding there will be a lot of formal stuff to attend to but I feel sure we will get the opportunity for a little adventuring while we are there.
The bags are packed. Passports checked and boarding cards printed. We Fly to Singapore and split the flight with a full day and night in this great city. We have been to Singapore before and have the lay of the place so it should be a nice inter flight break. The next morning we continue on to Auckland. Taxi is booked for 8am so for the moment...
