Grenada. Ancient moorish city of wonder. It strikes a chord as when I was a child my dad had an old yellow Ford Granada complete with an 8 track cassette player. Unfortunately he only ever had the 3 cassettes that came with the car when he bought it. He never bought any others because 1. He didn't really like music and 2. He couldn't afford them.
The 3 cassettes were Elvis Presley's greatest hits (I can't abide Elvis). Jim Reeves greatest hits and lastly Frankie Lane, the greatest hits. It was the Frankie Lane tape that was played to destruction and the most memorable song on it was "Grenada". Every trip involved one of these three musical treats and I subconsciously memorised all the words. It was a trauma and I can't to this day abide any of the songs other than "Grenada".
I look upon our visit here as some kind of therapy.
We caught the 10.45 Alfa bus from Málaga and a pleasant hour and forty five minutes later saw us alighting at the Estacion autobus on the outskirts of Grenada. I never realised that the Sierra Nevada mountains were so close to the city and although the temperature had climbed to the high twenty's the mountains remained snow clad. They made a glorious backdrop to the city.
Grenada is much bigger than Málaga and it took another bus to get us from the intercity station to it's old historic centre. We grabbed. A spot of lunch and a cold beer before finding yet another bus to our accomodation. We are staying in a cave underneath the Alhambra Palace and although it seems a long way from the centre on the map it is only a 10 minute uphill bus ride away and an easy 25 minute walk back downhill to the old town. It is amazing and Crispy loves it. We have been lucky enough to stay in all kinds of accomodation on our travels but this is really unusual.
After settling in we returned on foot to the old town to see what it had to offer and grab something to eat. We chose Tapas and it was really good. Small plates consumed with good wine over a couple of hours adjacent to the medieval cathedral.
Tomorrow I have booked tickets for the Alhambra palace tour. I booked them months ago as only a limited number of visitors are allowed in each day. After that we plan to visit some more rubble before taking in a flamenco show.
We are back in the cave now and the candles are running low so it must be bed time....
The pics.
