Soggy Sarande

It’s still overcast with sporadic rain storms. From talking to the local guys it seems it’s not unusual for this part of Albania in June. As I said before it’s still early in the season. Ksamil is beautiful but it exists purely as a beach resort. Everything is geared for fine weather. Crispy is a little grumpy at the change in the weather. Especially as she has just seen pictures from home and it seems it’s cracking the flags there. From re reading this blob it sounds like it’s raining constantly. It’s not. The rain episodes last maybe an hour or so and in between it is sunshine and scattered clouds.

The weather is set to improve from this evening so with a bit of luck it should be sunshine for the remainder of our little adventure.

We have moved to Sarande a day ahead of our planned departure. It’s a city and there should be more there to keep Crispy occupied on a rainy day. The main reason for moving is to be closer to the ferry port for our onward travel to Corfu and Igoumenitsa tomorrow. We have been to the ferry office and already have our tickets printed in readiness. I just hope there is no problem at passport control due to us being here illegally with no entry stamp from Albanian immigration. Crispy really does not fancy the prospect of a five years extended holiday in some remote Albanian women’s prison. I guess we will find out our fate tomorrow.

I’m currently sat on the balcony of a “budget” hotel near the promenade writing this update and practicing some new tunes on the bagpipe chanter. Crispy is having a little lie down on the bed. It was sunny when we arrived so we had a cheeky beer on the sea front but the rain has followed us and we have retreated to our room till it passes. It’s still very warm just a little soggy. That’s the weather by the way not Crispy.

The skies are clearing as I speak so hopefully we can get out and explore a little before tea. Maybe even use up our remaking Leke on a couple more cheeky beers (it’s of no use to us outside of Albania).

We spotted a little quaint taverna just on the limits of the main promenade. It looked amazing and the guy toting for buisness was very amenable. We decided to eat there as a treat.we have eaten out a lot since being in southern Albania and although it is cheap it still bites into the budget. It can also be a trial eating out every night. In Parga, and probably the remainder of the trip till Athens, we are going to make a determined effort to be more self sufficient. Plus we have to watch the waistlines as beer, wine and restaurant food isn’t conducive to a slim belly and healthy wallet.

It rained for the last time this evening after we had eaten in the taverna style restaurant. The forecast shows good weather for the remainder of our trip. The food in the restaurant was expensive, by Albanian standards, and not that brilliant if truth be told. Ah well you win some, you loose some. Crispy was a little disappointed as she was looking forward to it. I’ve promised her a bag of crisps on the boat tomorrow to make up for it.

Early night as a busy day tomorrow. Ferry to Corfu at 10.30 from the ferry port here. It’s only a few minutes walk from where we are staying.  We Change  ferry in Corfu town and head back to the mainland but this time to igoumenitsa in Greece. From there it is just a short journey to Parga and our home for the next week. We know Parga very well and are really looking forward to going back.

Bare and crispy signing off. Sarande, Albania
