The European Grand Tour

Well the summer is finally here and its time to go a wandering. Its been a while since Crispy shouldered a backpack and I dont want her getting too comfortable.
A couple of weeks ago Crispy and I were feeling a tad downhearted, as things had been a little stressful with one thing and another, so we decided on a cheeky week in the sun. A cheap deal was found on the interweb and we were jetting off to Olu Deniz in southern Turkey.  It must be 15 years since we last visited Turkey. Not for any special reason but it kind of fell off our travel radar. Well we must admit that we were not disappointed with the choice to return there. We forgot how amazing it is. Beautiful , stunning scenery, great friendly people and excellent food. Not to mention comparatively cheap compared with other Mediterranean destinations. I dont normally bother with the blog on our holidays as they are mostly that, holidays, and I think it would make boring reading. However as Crispy soon became aware there was a sneaky reason why I chose Olu Deniz as opposed to the other resorts. Crispy was looking forward to a lazy week in the sun. Loungers by the pool, lovely romantic evening meals, copious amounts of bacardi etc etc.
What I omitted to tell her is that Olu Deniz is the home of the second highest commercial paragliding centre in the world. Wow, what an opportunity and im sure you will agree not one to be missed. Crispy was thrilled at the prospect of walking off a mountain at 6000 feet strapped to some random turkish guy and went throigh her well practiced routine of the usual ritual "theres no way im doing that, you can do it on your own, nope, no way" . Within 2 hours of arriving in turkey we were in a mini bus heading for the top of Babadag mountain. We loved it. Definitely one of the best things we have ever done and it  came a close second to our favourite activity yet, jet skiing around Malaysia. Crispy enjoyed it so much she really wants to do it again at the first opportunity.
The pictures and video are on face tube if your interested.

The other small thing that I 'forgot' to mention to her is that Olu Deniz is the official start of the Lycian Way. A 500 km trail that runs along the southern coast of Turkey and ends in Alanya. The trail takes 25 days to walk and I plan to do it next April so this would be a great fact finding opportunity. Crispy has put her foot down with a firm hand and at this point is refusing to even consider doing it with me..
She did however walk the first days section with me and she really enjoyed herself. Steep mountain paths, forest trails, blazing sun and prickly bushes. Needless to say the next days section over the Babadag mountain saw me on my own and Crispy chilling by the pool with her kindle and bacardi.

Never mind its a few months off and she might give in and agree to do it with me. I hope so it would be a great adventure...

Well back to the present adventure.
We plan to start our trip in Salzburg tomorrow and by hook or by crook wind our merry way through Austria, Slovenia and Croatia all the way down the Dalmation coast to Dubrovnik. We have just over 3 weeks to do it so it should be very sedate. Im sure we can find some fun filled activities on the way to add a touch of sparkle. As a footnote beware of the German airline Eurowings. I booked the flight to Salzburg a few months ago and virtually every day since they have been changing the flight times. Yesterday, out of the blue, they cancelled the flight completely. As luck would have it we have found an alternative flight but it means leving a day sooner.  The email from the airline simply said.
Hello peter.
Your flight status is CANCELLED
Thank you for choosing Eurowings

Wow you cant beat German efficiency...
